Just to close this thread out for those reading later.
The new control valve + gaskets and O ring have been fitted and after a mix of short journeys and a run on our new section of dual carriageway (15mile) with a total of 38 miles of trouble free motoring. I am happy to say problem solved Many thanks to those who replied to my post, plus a special thanks to trikey who came over with his T4 and diagnosed the real problem. SteveN
