Diesel Starting Problems
My CDT seem to have developed an intermittent starting problem. Sometimes it just turns over and wont fire, sometimes it turns over and seems to fire up only for it to immediatelty cut out, and some times it starts OK.
Are starting faults something that a mechanic with an OBDII reader will be able to diagnose or do they usually need a T4 session. Car refuses to start at the moment, I have Autoaid breakdown cover but don't know of anyone locally with a T4. Last edited by Mothman; 22nd April 2018 at 14:05.. |

Left the car for 2 hrs and tried again and she started first pull and so it's definitely an intermittent fault. Just a thought but do the immobilisers on these sometimes cause an issue?

This could be injector leakback, a lazy fuel pump, or cam shaft sensor.
A leak back test can be done fairly easily. A fuel pump could be not running properly, so the car just doesn't start (a silent pump, or really noisy pump would suggest this) Cam shaft sensors can also cause issues, but normally only when the engine is warm. If you need help, drop me a message and we'll see what can be done to help you out (talk you through solving this) Chris

Yep sounds like something fuel related. As it is sometimes cutting out after starting then that won't be related to the cam sensor, as the ECM ignores it once the engine starts.
I take it the plenum drains are clear and the ECM hasn't gone for a swim? |

Thanks for the replies
Just checked the main plenum and it's bone dry and so doubt the ECU has had a bath. She started first time again this morning and so have stuck half a bottle of Redex in the tank and given her a good blast down the motorway in 4th gear on the basis that it probably wont do any harm. The injector leak back test may be beyond my limited skill set but I will have read up to see whats' involved. Both fuel pumps were changed by the previous owner about 6 yrs ago, however the car's now done 163K and so it's possible one may be playing up again. Will keep you posted |
