Hi John,

I was reading up on it last night and it is indeed a complex system. Could you help me to understand your problem a bit better?

When the AA provided you with a new key, was that the entire assembly i.e. blade fitted to fob?

Did the AA key operate the central locking and start the engine satisfactorily?

You referred to your "spare" key. Is that the key the AA provided or an original key which you hadn't lost?

When you say the "spare" key won't work, do you mean the central locking or starting the engine or both?

Cheers,

Simon

Hello Simon, Please don't shout at me, but I forget the exact details, I forget more and more nowadays. The AA man cut me a new key and chip, I am using that for everything. My original second key had stopped working so he put a new chip in and it worked. I put the second key in my wife's bag and didn't use it again until I tried to start the car. The key opens the car but won't start it. I've tried to remember everything, but I think that 's what happened. Thanks, John.

Thanks for your reply John. Do both keys operate the central locking satisfactorily? If so, we've narrowed down the problem to the transponder.

Programming a new transponder to your car is supposed to only be done by BMW in Germany. I doubt that the AA has the equipment to do it. If I understand Russ' early reply to you correctly, he's suggesting that the AA cloned, or copied, the programming from your original key to the new one they provided. Russ explains that this technique won't work in the long term.

I'd say to rescue the situation you have two choices John. You can contact Jamie or Russ who are knowledgeable in this specialist field or you can in theory order new keys from a BMW dealer. Do bear in mind that the BMW supply chain was set up over twenty years ago so it may be a struggle finding someone who recognises this procedure.

Do let us know how you get on.

Simon

Hello Simon, I tried the spare key and it opens the central locking. I recalled I had an old key with broken buttons and put this chip into the spare and the car started. I will now use the spare key for my main key. Will this keep working?. Many thanks for all the advice. John.

I would expect it to keep working John if it is an original transponder from a key fob supplied when the car was new.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the reply. My button on the centre console is working again, not sure what happened there.

I have a question, what is TOAF, is it a part or piece of equipment?
