Default advice on 75 with 120,000 miles

Hi, I am looking for a 2nd 75 diesel and have seen a 2000 cdt club model with 120,000 miles going for £1500.
It has recently had its clutch done, so what else should I check before I think about buying.

Thanks
Ian

It sounds a bit expensive to me.

Ian, depends what condition its in but I bought a nearly perfect car (CDT Club SE, 2000,W) with new clutch/slave cylinder, new front pads/discs etc...full history with that sort of mileage and paid £950. I personally would not pay more than around £1,000 but it would have to be good un.

For me the most important part would be the new clutch - and making sure it was the complete thing.

Plus, I think it depends upon the length of time you are thinking of keeping the car. If a long time then paying a little over the odds for a good car, to me, makes sense.

On the other hand you could buy a cheap car and then get lumbered with the cost of a clutch.

Personally, I would try to haggle but if that did nothing and I wanted the car I would pay the £1,500

£1500 doesn't sound much to me for a car with a new clutch fitted. Blimey, you can pay the same as this for much worse stuff, even though it may be "newer" and have less miles on it.

A test drive is essential here, I think.

Have a look in the For Sale section, Greeners has a ZT for sale.
Nice example for £2500.

its come to the time when, as they age, there are still enough around that people can ensure they buy with the essential works done (i.e. clutch/slave/master) But as these don't really add to the real value of the car - its just people like us that scrutinise its history and likely future, rather than just scrutinising whether its working ok) it is a bit scary what it does to the value of those cars without! I can see a lot more cars being broken.

You're right, there are many classics around that have had 1,000's spent on them but you can't add all the money you have spent on the car onto the selling price (maybe a little extra), with the Rover you can't say its originally a £1,000 car and because it had a complete clutch job its now worth £1500, just something to bear in mind, remember mine had masses done including a clutch/slave for £950 all in, the cheaper cars are out there and while they are it will keep prices down. There will come a time though when they become Classics, prime example the Ford Cortina, there were millions around, now they are few and far between etc etc....
