Unhappy Connor brakes woes

2003 Connie Se Cdti Auto Estate

Have been topping brake fluid up every month or so.Just a small amount but lately have noticed some brake fade. Took car into quick fit for a brake check and explained symptoms. They said pads were fine discs slightly warped but stll with meat on.
They could not see any signs of fluid leak so their verdict is the car needs a new master cylinder.
Understand from Rimmers these on back order and not available at mo.local dealer says they have not known a master cylinder go on a 75.

Just wondered if anyone had a view/advice on this one

Chris

It is normal for the fluid level to go down slowly, as the pads and to some extent the disk wears down. If they say there is no fluid loss, then I would assume there is no fluid loss from anywhere including the master cylinder - so how come they diagnosed a fault on the mater cylinder?

What exactly do you mean by brake fade?

1. The brakes suddenly whilst in heavy use become less effective.

2. The pedal starts to fall to the floor as you maintain the pressure on it with your foot whilst braking?

3. The pedal becomes soft and spongy whilst using it.

Default Connie Brakes

When used heavily from Motorway Speeds brake fade experienced.
The fluid is due for change as it's been a couple of
years. Am keeping an eye on fluid level and taking Connie for big service on Thursday at local Garage with Rover Trained mechanics. The guy I talked to says he has ten years experience on Rovers and has not had a 75 Master Cylinder fail yet. Will change the fluid and have brakes cleaned and adjusted and then keep an eye on it. Could well do with out the cost of replacing the Master Cylinder at the moment assuming I could get one !

Thanks
Chris

Must agree, I cannot recall any member reporting that they had to replace BMCyl. If that is the case I cannot believe there is not one available. It was common at one time to replace the seals and kits were available. Perhaps not for the 75 though.
Would be surprised if you could not find one on ebay though have you checked with XPart as they can check with branches countrywide.
If the above fails try Les at SMC, amazing what he has available. Maybe Land Rover MCyl. is interchangeable ??
Let us know what you find.
