Andrew
I used a pair of Mole grips and then used normal self tapping screws in place...

Addendum to post #20
One of the most embarrassing things happened on the way home from work this lunchtime, going up a loooong hill. An old MkII Land Rover appeared out of the billowing black smoke emitting from my posterior, he'd switched his headlights on and then overtook me at an agonisingly slow speed of about 35 mph!!

Hi Andrew,
One other thing to check which I missed off my previous post and that is to make sure there is no obstuction in the air intake system i.e., a blocked air filter, or something stuck in the Air Intake aperture or if there is a hose in the Air Intake trunking that is collapsing when air is being sucked into the engine. All these conditions will cause the problem you are experiencing. The only other thing I can think of is that the fuel injectors are for some reason over fueling, causing the excessive smoke, but this condition would not necessarily cause a serious fall off in performance. As an aside..... and final post
Last Thursday evening I had the black smoke trouble, did not use the car on Friday. Had to use the car on Sat to get to work and back home. A total of 15 miles.
In those three trips I used significantly more fuel than a normal week's driving!!!
