Re Important
Hi as Russ has pointed out, this is a very real issue with the immobiliser system on our cars.
This is the third time we have encountered this problem, firstly on my own new car, where it had been incorrectly diagnosed as needing a new ecu, secondly here http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=105390 , and one of Russ's customers last Sunday. There is information relating to this problem in BMW circles, whereupon the only known cure was to order a new key, however as Russ says, we are able to rescue "scrambled" keys, however the EWS immobiliser would require removal from the car for reprogramming. Sorry didn't get this in in time before Reebs locked the thread Brian |

Anyway, I've copied your reply into Russ's sticky again for reference. |

I had a chat about this with Brian last evening and we both decided that it was important to notify owners of this problem.
If we can stop another car suffering from this fault then it will be worthwhile. In all the cases we have come across battery issues have been present. In the latest case I was in the process of replacing a dead transponder for a members car as one of his keys had stopped working. I configured a new transponder and on re-fitting the tested the new transponder and key to see if it worked. Unknowingly the battery voltage had droppped and when I tried to start the car with the new transponder fitted to the key I got the familiar flashing of the lights, thinking the transponder may have a data fault tried the original and that did the same. I placed the car on charge and after the battery recovered, tried again, both keys would not start the car and the engine immobilised symbol illuminated in the instrument pack. T4 diagnostics on the keys showed that both keys had data faults and would now not start the car, a nightmare as you can imagine. Fortunately as always a copy of the immobiliser and key information had been taken when the new transponder had been coded. Because of this I was able to quickly re-sync the keys and all was well. Talking with the owner the battery had gone "flat" when the original fault with his key had occurred. Russ

Another reason why our cars could be broken. Garages will tell the owners too expensive to do as new ecu reqd. Shame, when this info has now come to light.
Thanks for the invaluable info. Something to consider for the future

This sounds serious?!
So what can be done to prevent it? Where is the sticky .pdf? I only have one key, does that make it worse? My list of jobs is getting longer and longer? Cheers |
