CARRY on LISTENING sounds apt.

Yes to that

The reason being to save turning it down and up every time I take it in and out of the garage it catches on the up and over door.So I bent it down a bit just needed 1\2 inch more clearance.

It's obviously NOT my day - got my RAC breakdown cover renewal notice this morning - which I originally took out whilst I was member of the Camping & Caravanning Club. As I am no longer a member of that Club, I thought I'd better ring the RAC and check what effect my non-member status had on either the cover or the premium. Explained the situation in about two sentences to the RAC help-desk - and then ensued 20 minutes of absolute lunacy:
First response from the person at the other end:
"is your car more than 7 metres long Sir?"
"er no - about 4.75 I think - why?"
"is your caravan more than 5 metres long Sir"
"er yes - a large proportion of caravans are"
"we haven't sent your renewal invitation out yet Sir"
"er - how come I'm holding it in my hand then - complete with a new plastic membership card?"
"what is the policy number please Sir?"
"8000 - 5754400"
"That's not your policy number Sir - I don't know what that number is"
"It's the number which is printed on your renewal notice next to the words 'policy number' "
"That number isn't on our system Sir"
"Well you obviously need a new system - BECAUSE THAT'S THE NUMBER ON YOUR LETTER WHICH YOU SENT ME" (I'm getting a bit irritated now )
"I'll put you through to my supervisor Sir"
"Does that mean I have to repeat all the information I've given you ??"
"Oh no Sir, I'll relay that on to my supervisor"
2 minutes pause whilst the phone bill is mounting, at about the same rate as my temperature AND temper.
"Hello Sir, my name's Paul - I'm a supervisor - how can I help you?"
"Well - has your colleague explained the problem to you?"
"No Sir - would you like to explain it to me?"
"NO NO NO - I would NOT like to repeat it all over again - what I WOULD like you to do is cancel my renewal - and if you still take the direct debit from my bank account, I will come down to Bristol and remonstrate with you personally"

Slam!!

By this time - Angela's got tears streaming down her cheek and simply cannot stop laughing

That's what I like - a bit of lateral thinking - or should that be vertical thinking

Many years ago, I used to have a tennis ball suspended from the garage rafters on a piece of string. I knew when that touched the windcrseen, I was far enough in to shut the garage door - without smashing the expensive Cibié spot lights on the workbench

That was a fruitful couple of hours, I now have a working alarm in the 260. Suspected the sounder had packed in, no mis-lock beep, tested the alarm, the indicators flashed but silence. However, operations were complicated by the BBUS being under a cover secured by headless security bolts, shear bolts, so called because the head shears off once they are tightened leaving a lip about the thickness of a washer.

Had another go at it this afternoon, managed to get the shear bolts out with a small pair of long nose vice grips and a lot of patience! Because of the limited room in the plenum I could only turn the bolts a few degrees at a time. Unbolted the BBUS, covered it with a wad of cloth before disconnecting it, I've had one go off before, its painful on the ears! Bolted a spare one I had in, connected it, pressed the lock button with the bonnet still open "BEEP"! Excellent, did a full alarm test and it screamed its head off. Replaced the cover with ordinary bolts.

While I had the plenum in bits I cleaned it out, hoovered out a few dry leaves and changed the pollen filter.

As it happens, I think I can get a decent deal with LV= who currently insure the car. They use Britannia Recovery - their price seems reasonable, includes recovery of the caravan as well as the car - for only a couple of quid more than I was paying the RAC.
