Yes, ive finally decided that all this modern up to the minute digital wotnot is tying us up in knots with 'non compatible this' and 'needs updating that.'

I opened one of my old cupboards recently and discovered I had loads of really good video cassetes, some Films, some Home videos, others hobby related, and the reason they are all stuffed deep in the depths of the cupboard is that my VCR has long since gone to VHS heaven and we have been 'told' that dvds are now the way to go! Hence the shiney, cheaply made, but frankly boring dvd unit nestling amongst the hi-fi frippery in my ultra modern, digitaly equiped lounge.

No place for anything like old analog vhs paraphanailia.

WRONG !!!!!!! I have just gone on-line (oh dear) and bought a top of the line pre-loved (another modernisim) JVC vcr with loads of 90's whistles and bells (remember them)!!!!!

You must be mad!! I hear you crowing, but alas, why should my collection of classic memories be holed away because technology has dictated we must and will, be up to the minute people, blowing our hard earned dosh on modern iffiness!

When this gem of a vcr arrives, i will thoroughly enjoy enjoy having a good old butchers at all my past lovlies, warts, crackles, lines, jitters and all!!! And no, im not going to convert them to digital media, how disrespectfull!!

My young son recently had a spin (sorry) on my vinyl + Rega 2 and was so impressed with the whole expirience that he has insisted we haul it outside at the next family BBQ,,, to impress the other young generation in the quality and involvment Analog life gives or gave us old farts!!!

Happy chrismas to one and all and hope you dont get any ipods, ipads, dvds, cds etc for crimbo!!

Still have a top of the range sony vcr. It doesn't get much use, but won't get rid of it as still have bucket loads of videos.

Also have both Sky+, a DVD/HD Burner, but still like video tapes.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm just love analogue, played keyboards in band years ago, everything was analogue and all was well, then digital raised its ugly head and analogue was discarded as everyone fell for the digital lie, and whats happening now, companies like Roland, Yamaha and Korg have spent a fortune trying to recreate that lovely analogue sound, and as yet they stiil haven't managed it
My last VCR was a JVC an excellent piece of kit.
Enjoy the fact you never sold out.

Bad things about VHS

Having to rewind tapes before returning them
Video plus that never really worked
Sitting there waiting whilst the auto-tracking tried to figure itself out or worse having to use manual tracking
The insanely complicated video timers!
The video quality
The sound quality
Having to actually find the tape you wanted rather then just selecting it from a menu!
Your favourite tape being chewed up!

I for one did not mourn the passing of VHS, it was OK while it was all we had but even in the 80's it's shortcomings were obvious. I now have a media centre hundreds of hours of TV, music and films plus if I want something I don't already have I can just stream it from the net.

Progress is sometimes a good thing
