Driving your 75/ZT to France this summer?
The French have introduced some new regulations effective this summer which will affect us as there are likely to be spot check and on the spot fines at the ferry ports
1. We have to carry a breathalyser self test kit, recommended we have two in case one is used (11 euro fine) 2. Warning triangle & hi vis jacket have been required for some time, but the jacket has to be carried in the car, not in the boot, otherwise a fine 3. We cannot carry a sat nav that is capable of showing the location of speed cameras, even if it is not fitted. The fine for this is very heavy (more than 1000 euros) 4. It is recommended to carry a fire extinguisher & first aid kit as we have (by law) to stop and assist in the event of an accident (involving someone else) Has any group member been stopped & checked when in France?

Between 2001 and 2009 when we went to France every year during the summer we were never stopped. Ironically the most dangerous thing proved to be the French car (a Renault Espace) we travelled in a couple of times, which decided to go into ‘emergency' mode- (26mph) on the Auto routes for no apparent reason. |

So you would need to remove the DD then? Because the nav has speed camera alerts.
Completely over the top! One more reason NOT to visit France!

Interestingly, items 1 and 3 are both mentioned in this month's Caravan Club magazine
Apparently 3 is in force already, but 1 remains a proposal at this stage Also they say that there are similar rules on the Sat Nav issue in Germany, Ireland and Switzerland

Not having read up on anything about this yet........,
basically thats pretty much any sat nav on the market? - I'm amazed the like of Garmin and Tom Tom havent thrown the toys out of the cot. Also out of interest what about android and iphones?. They have built in satnav that can easily have speed camera data added?. Are they seriously saying we cant take our mobiles as well?

I lived there for a year in the 80's - don't know if they still do it but they used to use a LOT more mobile cameras than we do and are a lot more sneaky about it.

More info about the Sat Nav issue here and this plus the breathalyser here
Seems the Caravan Club are not 100% as the latter, from the AA, says the breathalyser thing kicks in on July 1st

If you check www.about-france.com/travel, it actually states that opinion differs as to when the breathalyzer law comes into affect, it could be as early as 30th March.
Also, you need 1 hi-viz jacket per person travelling in the car, I, until recently, travelled to Belgium once or twice a month, and when the French introduced the Hi-viz jacket in the car rule (very quietly, I might add, only the Dover port staff warned drivers!), I was stopped at Dunkerque, or just outside 3 times in 4 months, and the French Police ONLY stopped GB cars! |
