If that doesn't cure it, then it could also be a dirty connection behind the rear bumper.

I had the same problem. Cleaned the sensors and checked they were working (they should make a continuous clicking sound when reverse is selected), took the bumper off to check the wiring was ok - no problems there.
The fix was to take it to an ex-Rover dealer and get them to reset the unit. This is not a DIY job as they had to re-register it onto the car's ECU. Swapping the unit for a secondhand one does not work (I tried that too!) as it has to be registered to the car electronically, which seems a bit of an odd design decision but that's the way Rover made them... |

If there is any corrosion on the faces of the sensors then rub them down and respray them - worked for me for the last few years.

Thanks for the answers Gents but so far it seems if just cleaning them has done the trick (fingers crossed)

I get this quite often at home . Solution is to get out of the car and tell next-doors' cat to clear off from behind the car !

Have you actually looked under the back bumper?
Same thing occurred to mine when the garage forgot to fix the wiring back on the bumper and it was left on the back box to burn away.........

Sorry I can't remember as it was a little while ago and it was bundled in with some other work on the car but it wasn't expensive - maybe £20 or so out of a total of about £70 I spent fixing a couple of things. After it was done I wished I'd gone to the garage in the first place rather than spend a morning taking the bumper off and tinkering with the wiring. If the sensors are all clicking it's unlikely there is a problem with the wiring.
