Default Engine overheat

For the alst 6 months I have been telling everyone how good a car the 75 is and that nothing has gone wrong with mine and yada yada. well it was bound to bite back at some stage wasn't it?

Today the temp gauge went up in the red area and the "Engine Overheat" mesage turned on the LCD screen. The fan is running as it always has and the engine shows no sign of actually overheating. Coolant leverl is OK. The temp gauge first stays in the normal range, then it suddenlystarts wandering very quickly towards the red area. From normal to overheat it takes 10-15 seconds.

Any ideas?

Update on this one. It was low on coolant. I got the vest part of two litres into it but now it doesn't seem to sink anymore. However, I haven't done any longer journeys for a while but plan to take it for a 200 km roundtrip tomorrow. That should heat it up enough to tell whether it is consuming coolant at such a rate that I should worry about it.
This lack of coolant also made me come to the conclusion that the temp sensor must have been up in the air when it showed that the car was overheating.

If it is a leaking head gasket, wouldn't that also show on the emission test? I just had it MoT'd and all "gasses" were good, they said.

Ok, had the car in for a service yesterday and they found a small leak on the radiator. We try with FOrte Radiator Stop Leak treatment now but if that doesn't help then i guess I have to get a new radiator. Any suggestions as to where i should buy one?

The small bore coolant paths on the KV6 mean that 'Stop Leak' and other such products can do more harm than good as they may lead to blockages and thus hgf. Brand new MGR radiators are available from ecp car parts who come highly recommended. Someone should be along shortly with their contact details.

Are the coolant paths on the KV6 smaller than most modern engines? The garage I use is an authorized VW-Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz dealer, and they say even these manufacturers recommend this treatment if small leaks are found during new vehicle PDI checks.
