How to fit a simple timer to FBH
FBH [985 models only, see below]
Check this number on your FBH. If it starts 985 then pin 3 wants to go to earth. If the number is not 985 do not use this How To.[Earlier FBH require 12v dc to fire up the FBH]. First, fit pin and with wire connected to [empty] pin 3 of main plug in Fuel Burning Heater. [my FBH came with plugs and a short length of cable] I have joined a black wire [this goes to heated seat switch] to the grey wire [circled]. Run wire around back of engine bay unit it reaches drivers side plenium. Push wire through empty rubber grommet into plenium. Then push wire through from pleneum into cabin, it emerges near steering column. Make sure wire will not foul wiper linkage. Remove trim under steering wheel and thread wire through into center consol. Switch. Obtain heated seat switch with plug and short piece of wire connections. [The wire colour connections to the switch shown below are for demonstration purpose. Follow pin numbers ] Solder wire from FBH to pin 1 on Heated Switch plug. Connect a wire from pin 5 of Heated seat plug to ground. Connect a wire from 2 to any permanent live [on a facelift 75 this could be the cigar lighter]. Connect a wire from pin 3 to any red/white [maybe on another switch plug] connection for the night time illumination. Fit heated switch upside down [does it look a bit like a FBH ?]. When the switch is pressed the FBH will fire up [without ignition key] and stay on for 15 minutes. The timer is actually inside the Heated seat switch. The little green led integral with the switch lights up when switch pressed. When the 15 minutes is up the FBH will power down but if you want to continue operating the FBH press the switch again. Completing this mod will enable your 75 diesel fitted with a FBH to warm up quicker when the outside temperature is above 5 degrees C. Quicker warm up could help with your MPG. Thanks to Pete [Union Wheels] for help with information on this how To. Dave T Last edited by Duotone; 13th November 2013 at 06:28.. |

Thank you for this wonderful idea. I've been wanting to make a switch for a while now and this is the best way - with a timer and OEM look.
I'll wait with the fitting, though, as I'm planning to fit a remote control as well. So I could start the FBH remotely from inside the house and when it's too warm outside for the FBH to fire automatically, I could use the timer to still use the auxiliary heater option. I'm searching for a decent remote control kit with a timer. I'd like the fob to have a slide cover and 2 buttons (on/off). It should work as follows: press ON button, FBH starts, 15 minutes later ATC turns on, everything turns off after 30 or so minutes or after pressing OFF on the fob. Alternatively I could run ATC from FBH pin 4. As I've read, the later 98570 models trigger output on pin 4 (+12V?) right after it is forced to run via grounding pin 3. Meanwhile, I'll have a beautiful 2-button switch panel instead of a plain blank Last edited by Dragrad; 8th June 2014 at 23:36.. Reason: Thumbnail enlarged |

Just out of interest could you wire this to any old switch say a toggle or a rocker switch and manually turn it on and off instead of it being on the timer so if I left the toggle switch in the on position it would per antsy be on?

I must repeat, however, that grounding pin 3 works only on later models (98570B). |
