TomTom GPS
Hi Everyone, hope you are all well. I have a question, have been given a TomTom One XL for a present, am using it via the in car charger. Would it be difficult to 'hard wire' it in the vehicle? and any ideas how to do it?
As usual any advice would be greatly apprieciated. Many thanks, JRT |

Hi Guys, thanks for your replies. I have the device fitted to a Pro-clip connected on the Dash by the clock and air vent, just wondered if it was possible to connect it to the vehicle electrics, (the live feed to the radio for example), instead of using the in car charger via the cigar lighter socket. Cheers, JRT.

You can hard wire it but you need to still use the cig charger lead as it has some fancy stuff in there.
Hope someone will pop on and give you better details of how and why |

Thanks Kandyman, So it may mean splicing a cigar lighter socket extention, from the in car cigar lighter wiring, and then connect the tomtom charger lead to that. Then hide the wires behind the dash. Not as simple as plumbing the device via the back of the radio. Cheers.

I had my IPAQ based GPS fitted to a Brodit clip between the two centre vents.
The cable dropped neatly down behind the centre console and the point where it disappeared couldn't be seen at it was behind the IPAQ holder. I used one of those 12volt car extension cables. I cut the plug off and tapped straight into the radio loom. I left the socket on the other end to plug the IPAQ power adaptor into and just zip tied it all together. |

as allready said, the tom tom socket has a circuit board inside so has to be retained. The best way is to buy a spare cigar lighter sochet and hard wire to the car and then plug the tom tom into this. If you lower the large trim below the steering wheel everything can be hidden behind, and you can wire into the connecter that feeds the ignition barrell.
