I really do not want to tell you what I have spent!
Car cost £450, since head Head gasket, cam belts etc, water pump, radiator, recon turbo, full discs/pads/tyres, brake pipes, replacement auto box. Why did I do it? Because I love the driving experience, the design and the whole thing and its such a pity to scrap em when they fail. We went on a 1600 mile holiday in France etc, my wife slept 80% of the time (thats what I call a comfy ride!), wafted along the roads like an air cushion and still returned 37.7mpg (1.8 Turbo auto). I want another 3/4 years out of it yet so I'm prepared to invest. I know it makes no logical sense but then you wouldn't buy one based on logic, you buy one because if you are like me you've always wanted one. Just one more job for now and thats a nasty dent in the sill (not me guv - done by previous owner). Thats scheduled for a week or so away and thats it for now....until of course the next problem. |

If I ever had a repair bill higher than £1000 in a year, I would seriously consider buying a new second hand one, but that opening a new can of worms, which I don't want to do (maybe you would be the same? ) I have figured it would cost me at least £3-4.5 grand to get a solid car that would be care free for a few years, but I like the hassle the car gives me and keeps me on my toes with its repairs, just so I can have an excellent drive and enjoy myself while doing so. In the brown book it states my car is worth £800, but to me its worth £2,500 at least and wouldn't ever let it go for scrap (I would rather buy a new transmission as this is my limit for a one go repair), but if it came to the lump or serious engine over haul I would exchange it to someone that knows their engines as I don't want to spend that much money overhauling a diesel power plant). My car parts so far have cost me not so much as if I had other brands of cars and the parts at the moment are fairly easy to get hold of! I do have my gripes with the car like rattles in the cabin and groans and moans, but I will spend to sort these things out as its such a good ride! This is my two pence worth hopefully it helps... I do see my car as an investment and love to hear what other people think...

It's an old car just like us.
Imagine the cost of new knees, hips, heart ops etc, the ZT is a veritable bargain

No more than the monthly depreciation on a brand new Ford Focus...
Seriously. |

In the seven years I have had my 75 I estimate I have spent about 5K in mods-updates-repairs-and maintenance, cars cost money innit...
But... The car drives much better now and should be reliable for quite a while yet... (Car now on 178.000 miles.) ... Last edited by James.uk; 15th September 2015 at 01:53.. |
