Default Can anyone explain this, key from new Germany doesnt start car??

OK, this is strange, my new tourer came with only one key, I contacted a local key specialist and paid £252 for a key replacement from Germany, he quoted VIN, needed log book, ID etc., key arrived and the guy (rightly) expected the key to start the car but just expected to have to programme the remote central locking side of things.

The new key fits the barrel and turns, but wont start the car??, I have a key that works fine, he is going to contact the supplier but I suspect there is part of this cars history that I dont know which is why the car key wont work, the key I have that works is a brand new shiny key, and the door lock barrel is different??, that makes me suspect that something has been done, it has obviously had the door barrel changed
OK guys so the new key from Germany fits the barrel and operates the C/L fine, my question is:

Is it possible to fix the security chip local to the ignition barrel so that both keys will start the car, or is there another solutiuon??
I feel nervous as I only have one fully working key, the car is in lovely condition and I really want to keep it for many years, I need 2 keys that will start the car.

Wow, that's an expensive key!
You really should have spoken to one of the traders on here who could have done you a key much cheaper.
You'll need to get the transponder in the key coded to your car, which I would have expected to have got for that price.
Has your car been remapped or had any T4 changes? Maybe something has been changed electronically with the cars VIN and the transponder doesn't match.

I drive a 75 not entirely because they are inexpensive (although that helps), I choose to drive a 75 because I love them, the car cost £1700 and is like new, if I bought a £20,000 car, I likely woldnt like it as much as I like this one, so £252 for a key wasn';t an issue and I wanted minimum hassle, but it doesnt work, I think it should have done shouldnt it??

I am not entirely sure of the history, it was a cat D for a door replacement but I have full service history, it was a 1 owner car and is otherwise perfect

Your quickest fix would probably be to contact Lynn at Exeter Road Garage Newton Abbot they have T4 facilities ....

Question

Sorry Mangizmo, but I'm confused as to why you need to ask. The obvious answer, which you (should) already know, is to see one of the T4 experts who regularly supply working keys to members here for a lot less than you paid the german supplier. But then you already knew that as you were given good advice on your previous thread http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=230175 . No doubt you had your own reasons for ignoring the advice given.

Well thats simple, I am not retired and am busy working most of the time, I like 75s but could go out tomorrow and buy virtually anything I liked (within reason) I am very busy, I live in the back end of nowhere and my nearest expert was hundreds of miles away, £252 wasnt really a big deal and I don't need to save £100 quid or whatever vs the assosiated hassle of the alternative solution if it sorted the problem, peanuts in car terms, but it hasnt worked, my time is far more valuable than that, to sort it your way either involved a whole days 500+ round trip or removing the immobiliser, posting it off, being without a car for a week and even then there are risks involved, I contacted my local (Exeter Road garage Newton Abbot a mere 120 mile round trip) T4 dealer and they couldnt help if thats what it takes, reluctantly I will just go out and buy a new BMW with warranty and current support and stomach the cost, we have to accept that Rover are now gone, if you are determined to drive a 75 in this throw away society and you are busy, its no longer a viable option unless you want car ownership to be a lifestyle choice, great car, but yesterdays news

Or you could have asked one of the T4 key guys to come over (Phil-T4 travels for one) and do it for you, Or taken a days holiday and gone (had a fun drive) over to MGR South Devon. Like I said though - you had your reasons for going the way you did. As a working person myself I appreciate that. Seeing as this is for a second key, it's a non-urgent thing so could have waited a bit anyhow. Perhaps Barnstaple is nice for a day out.

On a slightly more helpful note, the key 'specialist' you did employ should know how the BMW immobiliser system works and have the capability to enter the identity of the new key into the system. If they don't or can't then reject the key and pay them nowt. You ordered a fully working key - which you haven't got: it's down to the expert to get that right - and not your, or your car's fault if they can't.

Steady on, not all 75 owners are retired. Many of us are very busy workers with families ourselves. As enthusiasts we put a bit more effort into our choice to drive a 75 (or ZT) than many people put into whatever they drive. But yes, that is a choice we make. 'Rover are now gone', well duh for a decade now. I drive 15k miles a year just to go to work and back - and it's still cheaper per mile to drive my 75 in comfort than buy a new or nearly new 'cheap' (read cramped and uncomfortable) car: and for the mileage I do no more in maintenance costs. The majority of work done on my car are service items, things that wear out normally (exhausts, brakes, tyres), and improvements and modifcations which I choose to make. ALL cars have failures and breakdowns at some point, the Rover is no more difficult to repair than any currently manufactured vehicle.

When I bought my '75 (some 9 years ago now), it came with 1 key, as the dealer had misplaced the spare. He ordered a replacement at his own cost via my local (ex) MG Rover dealer - not cheap, but I wasn't paying so no problem.

The key was brand new from Germany, but even so, I seem to recall that when I went to collect the key, they had to use T4 to pair the key to the car in order for it to start the engine.

Hope this helps,

Cliff
