Default Advice please - sub frame

Hi

Not something I've experienced before so at a bit of a loss as to how to advise.

A friend of mine has had their 75 in for a pre mot today, they knew it was going to need about £350 of work however they've now been told that the subframe is rotten and the car is dangerous.

The garage haven't quoted for the subframe because they assumed that the £350 of known work (rotten sills, front suspension arms and tyres) combined with the newly discovered need for subframe replacement would make the repair far too expensve.

My question is this:

Has anybody ever had to replace a subframe? and if so, what sort of money are we talking about?

Thanks in advance

Do they really mean the subframe or do they mean the lower rear arms ?(more likely to rot than the subframe itself). I think someone else on here was told the same thing at an MOT a few weeks back, and it was really the arms that needed replacing, not the subframe.

It's definitely the subframe Pete.

I've seen the pictures, I'll see if I can get one to post.

I've found many MOT stations overdoing the failures a bit lately, their criteria has got tighter and big words that fail cars can worry people. If it's rusty sills and a cruddy subframe, then it's a mender, if it's a rusty car full of damp and flaky rust all over the underside, it's a scrapper because it will be all through the car. It's a fine balance with these cars, some will make it and most won't.

That's one of the good things about this place - there's no inconsistency in mot stations. We only have government run centres staffed by civil servants.

I've never known a 75 have a rotten subframe before, and the sills, my goodness, they're awful underneath. You can literally put your finger against them, press and rust just drops all over the drive.

He ''rescued'' the car earlier in the year, a couple of months before I sold my saloon - I feel so bad for him because he paid top money for it.
