Default CDTI low speed fan test test

search isnt working for me at the min
so now having a diesel and being used to KV6's just wanted to double chec how to test the slow speed fan

I believe on the diesel this can be done without the engine running

ignition on
demist setting air con on and slow speed should work right?

Hi Daz.
welcome to the derv drivers association to test the low speed as you say ignition on position II, air con off and press only the demist button, look through the front grill to see if the fan is continually running if so low speed is working.

If not continually, you then need to check if the fan as a silver resistor in place at about 2.0oclock if yes this will need changing for a gold resistor one.

If no resistor in place you most likely have a four wire 3 speed fan and this would need checking, this can only be done by removing from the car and the fan motor being opened to see if it is ok to re-brush, depending on the commutator .

One other thing about the diesels Daz - don't worry two much if the fan isn't running. The diesels run cool, so the fan is more for the aircon than the engine in our temperate climate.

I fitted a single speed fan from a Rover 25 as a temporary measure quite a few years ago now, and as it worked fine, I haven't got round to replacing it yet.

From memory the demist test of the fan won't work if the AC has degassed - given you've got a car you don't know the history of, it may be worthwhile getting the AC regassed before trying this - I got caught out by this.

previous owner reports it was regassed this year

although there seems to be a climate control problem as it doesnt seem to kick the vent fans on full blast if you have it on auto and put the heat right up or down like my other 2 daid so it will need some investigation ..maybe the temp sensor byt the sterring whieel ?
