I have a Sigma 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6 ASP AF APO on my Olympus. It's a bit slow in focusing and a bit noisey but still is a great lens though. I think the 500mm is prettty much the same as in quality and operations.

I have the same lens without stabilisation in a Canon fit.

I'm very pleased with the performance when you consider how cheap it is. Not on a par with L series glass of course but neither is the price

I've never owned the Sigma 50-500mm f/5-6.3 HSM lens, though I have used one occasionally. I did own the Sigma 135-400mm and I would confidently say that the 50-500mm is in a class above it for build, focus speed and image quality.

The 50-500mm is one of Sigma's "EX" lenses, which are at the top of the range when considering third-party offerings. It's pretty large and heavy, though, so unless you have decent hand-holding technique or plan to use it on a solid tripod, it may be better to look at one of the newer offerings with the "OS" stabilisation facility. For example, there is a recently-released Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 OS HSM. It's not an EX lens, although from a brief handling it feels to be up there with the 50-500mm. Image quality is said to be good, again as long as you're able to support the lens in a stable fashion. Don't underestimate the difficulty of doing this reliably, especially if you're going to be using the lens on a DX cropped-sensor camera.

I agree that it's a bit of a handful, but I used mine just recently to take handheld photos of a low flying helicopter, admittedly in good light (ie fastish shutter speeds) and they were perfectly acceptable.

On a tripod for wildlife shots though. That's the ideal use in my opinion.
