Welding experts
A quick question for any welding experts. Is it possible to 'undo' the weld on an exhaust hanger (on a silencer) and re-weld it in a different position?

I'd say you'd need to cut through the weld with and angle grinder carefully so as to not damage the silencer or the hanger, clean back both and re-weld in the new position.

Here's a pic of the box. The vertical rod A needs to be where the red dotted line is. The weld is fairly chunky - cutting through it without damaging the rim of the silencer (or the rod itself) could be a bit tricky. Unfortunately, the bottom bend in the rod (point A) needs to be half way along the existing weld (point B) - so the existing weld will need to be ground off completely, without messing up the crimped rim that holds the two halves of the silencer together. Hmm. Assuming I can get the rod off successfully, what's the best type of welder for putting it back on again? Last edited by Blink; 18th March 2020 at 13:38.. |

No, not tricky at all.
Get a 1mm cutting blade on an angle grinder, cut and the thing is off. Move to desired position, hold, weld. job done. 5 minutes max for a guy with skills and equipment. Nothing tricky at all. You would do this with MIG welding, also known as CO2 welding. You can also do it with MMA, or arc welding, but that is almost out of fashion. TIG could be used, but would be a waste of time. Take it to a local exhaust shop.

Don't touch the original weld on the silencer box, cut the hanger off where it turns upwards.
Bend a new piece of steel then weld it to the piece of hanger that is welded on the box, this will allow a good weld as you will be joining two pieces of the same thickness without risking damage to the silencer.

Just needs someone to zip it off with a thin slitting disc, reweld and cover with a zinc paint. That weld (if it's a picture of the actual item) isn't great to start with anyway, barely fused for the most part that will certainly rot and drop off in a couple of years.
