Default Shiney Chef. HMS Sheffield D80.

40 years ago today the type 42 destroyer HMS Sheffield was struck by an Exocet missile whilst off the Falkands.

20 of her brave crew were killed, she was the first RN warship to be lost in action since the 2nd World War. Her last resting place is now a war grave and a new memorial is being unveiled.

Rest in peace.

There's a host of reports about a disturbing story regarding the Exocet missiles used during The Falklands conflict - here's a link to one of them. Should it turn out to be true then I'll be lost for words.

Strange that. The RN's Leander class frigates were equipped with Exocet but this off button has never been mentioned before. More likely some 2-bit journalist who wasn't even born at the time and brought up playing World of Warship on his laptop, trying to make a story out of nothing. I mean, let's carry on stirring things up between us and the French why don't we?

God bless the Royal Navy.

Ship, land or air borne missiles might be different (usually are) due to the differing operational parameters. A "kill switch" for the air launch version could be true, especially in more developed versions after a RN purchase.

If there was/is an off button then it will possibly have serious consequences for all concerned. Like most things we will most likely never get the truth.

Just hope it is journalistic perfidy.

This story reminds me of the allegation that during the 2nd World War Irish fishing boats refilled German U-boats in the North Atlantic.
