Immobiliser chip

Hello, once more I am in dire straits, this time it is my own NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- stupidity that has caused it. I changed the key fob on my 2001 2.5L 190+ ZTT, and after swapping everything over I hung the key up and left it, in the happy knowledge that next time I tried to get in my car and drive, the fob would work. Unfortunately I was taken ill, and for just under a week I was laid up and unable to drive. Today, Saturday 10th February, I ent out to the car to take it for a drive, to blow the cobwebs out of both myself and the car. Anyway, I know many of you have guessed, the car would not start, and after double checking, it turns out that I had neglected to swap the immobiliser chip over, from the old fob, to the new fob, so here's the question. Does anybody know if it is possible to bypass the immobiliser, or if anyone knows of someone in the North Norfolk area that can come out to sort out a key and program it to my car, because I am absolutely stuffed without it.
Any help or CONSTRUCTIVE criticism will be greatly appreciated, any negative criticism would be pointless as I have beaten myself up about it so much now that you wouldn't be able to say something that I haven't already said myself.

You're not the first to have this happen to them I believe. I take it the old fob is long gone?

Unfortunately, I don't think any are near Norfolk. If you dont mind a bit of interior disassembly, you could remove the EWS (immobiliser) module and post it to one of the specialists, as that's all they should need to code a new chip.

Unfortunately that's not up to date, written nearly eight years ago. Phil-T4 no longer trades and hasn't logged in for close to a year, in fact several have joined the list then dropped off it since it was written. Other than Russ I'm not sure who is still doing keys.

Alan,

Try Peter Remmington at Auto-Tec in Kings Lynn.
Some years ago he bench tested the BCU I'd removed from my Citroën so he might be able to help or advise on your key.

As I understand it though, if you've accidentally thrown away your immobiliser chip a new one will be required. This will then need to be programmed to your car.

As a long stop, the original official route was to approach BMW to program a new complete key for you which is done in Germany without you having to remove and supply any ECUs. It will probably be eye wateringly expensive though.

No longer possible Simon - Rimmer's discontinued the key service, although might be possible through a BMW dealer (?).

It is possible to by-pass the immobiliser but not sure what your insurance company will say if they knew.

Last figure I heard for a key through "official channels" was well over 200 quid plus VAT.

Sounds like you need 2 keys , not one. Send the parts away and get a spare.Should you lose the only key you have , after you get one sorted, you will be in an even worse situation !!

The BMW community might be another avenue to explore if you wish to remain local in your quest for help. The same system and EWS editor tools are common to that community so it might be possible for one of their gurus to help you.

Thanks everybody, it has been very instructive, I actually have key cover with my insurance company, so I got a chap from Gt. Yarmouth come all the way to near Fakenham and do me a key. I said that I thought I should probably gave 2 keys, but he told me he had been instructed to do one key only. He agreed it would be more sensible to do two, just in case I lost one or something. Even the insurance company said it was a very good idea to do two, unfortunately, if I wanted a second key I would have to stump up for it myself. If I approached the guy who did the key outside of the insurance company they would cancel my insurance, put me on some list, and end the contract with the key guy. I could however get another key done if I went through the insurance company, and that way they get there wedge out of it, and it nearly doubles what the guy said he would charge me, and what he charges them. No idea how to approach someone on here so not sure how to contact the chap suggested.
