Dont you just love Microsoft
Took an HD out of one computer and put it in another one (has XP on it).
Tried to log on and it told me I could not log on until I had activated XP so clicked on 'Activate Now'. It took me to a screen that told me that XP had already been activated and to Exit. Exited, tried to log on and it told me I could not until I had activated XP. Click on Activate Now and it tells me that it is activated................

If the motherboard, bios, sound card, graphics etc are all diff, would the disk work? It didn't when I swapped drives into another PC.. I had to reformat and load from scratch.

XP was designed with a detection set up, basically any major hardware change would require you to re acivate the OS.
All you need to do is call Microsoft on teh Freephone number and they will talk you through activating it. I have done this many times before without problem. Just click "Activate over Phone" in teh Options menu when it asks.

moving hdd from 1 pc to another, wont work 99% of the time, if it did then my job would be easy, only if the pc's are of similar spec and the same make with mostly the same parts inside, a compaq hdd with xp wont go into eg a fujitsu. it most will reboot when it starts to load windows, win me-98-95 will transplant into a new machine, but win 2000/xp/vista/7 wont, if you managed to do it, you were lucky. what windows is detecting is that the by placing the hdd into a new machine its thinking the hdd was cloned and thus being place illeagally into a new pc. easiest way is to reinstall the os.

Had similar problem when I upgraded my motherboard and cpu but had to phone MS. Boy do they ask questions i.e. 'Why change your motherboard etc?' answer - 'None of your business, I might go Mac..' Soon registered me again.
