Question Unable to reset service indicator!

Evening all,

I had the car serviced a couple of weeks ago and when I collected it he said that he hadn't been able to reset the service indicator but that when checking the guide it said it couldn't be reset when more than 1K miles left before the service is due and I had around 1200 miles left.

So I popped back in today for him to reset it as it now reads 300miles left but it still won't reset. Has anybody else had similar problems or have any idea why this might be happening?

He uses a Solus Pro unit from snap-on and has used it successfully on my car for the last 4/5 services. When he selected the service reset on the unit it just did nothing. He cleared any codes and tried quite a few times and it just wouldn't work!! We are both now very confused!!

you can reset the indicator by earthing one of the outputs on the OBD port, 8 i think.... This is how i did mine anyhow. Confirm the pin before trying though...

Or shell out a measly £10-£15 on a proper MGR based tool. These days, it's not worth risking a short in the diagnostic socket when so much is at stake in there. I used to employ the bent paperclip trick, but found it very hit and miss. After reading about blown fuses, I stopped. I actually paid over £100 for my BMW made resetter but they're peanuts now.

Whatever you do don't use a paper clip. For a safer 'Blue Peter' reset tool take a short piece of wire, bare the ends and solder to prevent any stray strands sticking out then solder a couple of millamps quick blow fuse in the middle.

Sorry if I wasn't clear but I was not asking how to reset it but why the machine was unable to reset it!

I am not overly concerned about the readout itself as I know it has been serviced and I am aware that there are other methods to reset it. It is more that does the fact that the machine is unable to do the reset point to a problem somewhere?

To be honest the quickest way to find the answer as to whether its his tool or the car that is at fault is to try one of the other resetting methods.

I don't think that's correct. I've reset mine when the display shows more than 1,000 miles yet to go. It wouldn't make practical sense for servicing and reset to be done only within that band. As to why the garage tool doesn't work any longer I couldn't guess. Maybe it's not fully compliant with MGR's OBD system?
