Correct tyre size for 17inch alloys

I have a 2004 rover 2.5v6 with the 17inch “star spoke” alloys
Does anyone know what the correct tyre size is? Car currently has 215/50/17 tyres but I note that the manual states:

225/45/17 for 7.0j x17
215/50/17 for 7.5j x 17

So I suppose the question I am really asking is are my “star spoke” alloys 7.0j or 7.5j?

Hoping to get answer without having yo take an alloy off in this rain to check!

I have a contemporary with star spoke alloys.
Tyre size are 215 50 17.

7.0J are 7 inches between the inside of the flanges. Tyre fitter will measure this before fitting.

Interesting that as one would think the 7.5J would be specified for the 225 aspect tyre and the 7.0J for a 215. Maybe MGR had better deals (the tyre sizes put on other vehicles) in the 45/50 ratio? The trouble with a wider tyre on the front is that it may make the steering heavier or more imprecise?

Always go with the handbook as an insurance company may use non-specified items as an excuse to deny or reduce payments unless, of course, you have asked for agreement.

MGR fitted both sizes to these rims during production.
I changed mine to 225/45/17 as they were cheaper to buy.
There was no difference to the heaviness of the steeering and it did not change how precise it was.

In another recent post I've been trying to establish exactly what MGR specified for the 2004 2.5KV6 Contemporary SE Hi-line 'Sports Suspension' option and the original Owners Handbook (that came with my week 09 produced vehicle) is RCL0458EN (3rd Edition) 01/2004 - this has no reference at all to 225/45 R17 tyres (the only 17" option is 215/50) but does refer to 225/45 R18 and also lists wheel option sizes of 7.0J or 7.5J x17 and 7.5J x18; recommended tyre pressures are listed accordingly.
I've now obtained copies of Owners Handbook RCL0458EN (5th Edition) 12/2004 - this version does include 225/45 R17 options (and tyre pressures) for all Rover variants (although not MG's) with the 225/45 R17 tyres being matched to 7.0J x17 wheels.
I'm still in the dark regards what 'Sports Suspension' actually included but I'd guess lower profile tyres is one bit of the puzzle.

Quite, both are in the handbook and hopefully tested on vehicles by MGR to see if anything untoward resulted. However, it is not unknown for wider or lower aspect tyres to produce undesirable effects. It may only be accelerated tyre wear or something more fundamental. In any case the tyre size you have had fitted has been cleared by the producer of the vehicle.

I had a Transfer Box go u/s on a X-Type Jaguar and thus made a claim. The appointed "Engineer" assessing tried to suggest the incorrect tyres might be being used. Pointed to the list on the A post but he still put it in his report.

My understanding is the mki 17 wheel options for the 75 (i.e. meteors and serpents) were factory fitted with 225/45/17 size tyres.

For mkii 75 models, this was changed to 215/50/17 for all 17 inch wheel options (i.e. meteors, starspokes, and vikings. Although I've seen many Serpents fitted to mkii 75's, I'm not sure if it was dropped as a official option for mkii models as they aren't included in the list of wheel options.
