M47 Smoking from the top end.
Ok, this isn't on a Rover, but my Mum's Freelander with the M47 engine.
She is away on holiday and frantically phoned me saying the engine was very hot (temp gauge normal though). The lads our Ipswich EU branch kindly took a look. They took the engine cover off and it was smoking quite a bit from under there. Not blue, but a thin, grey colour. The oil level was sitting on the Min marker so have topped up to just shy of Max. I've never worked on one of these engines before, besides 2 routine services. Are there any common leak points on these engines I should look at? Injector seals or Rocker Cover are the things that spring to mind

Will have a look as soon as it gets recovered home. Thanks
This forum makes looking up procedures for these sort of things a doddle

She didn't mention anything like that. Have asked her to start it and check, but my mum isnt the most technically minded when it comes to cars

One of the screw holes for the top cover is only shallow, but people often put the wrong bolt in it and it breaks through allowing oil to escape. It's the bolt nearest the engine oil filler. Check if for leaking.
Check sump pressure by removing the oil filler cap and running the engine, some pressure is fine, but it shouldn't blow your hand off the hole when you try to cover it. Blocked PCV filter is the next port of call... ... Last edited by James.uk; 3rd June 2014 at 15:59.. |
