Possibly, but that doesn't explain why I've seen other decatted diesels without the strong smell of fumes

i had a very similar problem with my car,strong smell of diesel worse when window open,looked at all the main possibilities nothing,one day while cleaning engine noticed diesel all round rim on fuel filter,took it of cleaned it up tightened it up,diesel gone from rim no more diesel smells,worth a check.

There is a flexi joint in the exhaust pipe where it goes down from the engine and turns under the body at the base of the bulkhead. Because it is a flexi joint sometimes it has a tendency to split. I had a 75 tourer before the ZT and I had fumes smell for a long time till I found it.
