Default ZT vs MX5

So an Mazda MX5 tried to take the ZT on at the lights... ZT won

The MX5 wasn't far behind me but the gap gradually got bigger. How quick are MX5's? Im not sure what engine it was. Lately i've felt as though the ZT's been a bit slower than it used to be especially from 40-70 but i don't know if that's just me.

Would you expect a ZT cdti 160 to just about pull away from a MX5 or should it be better than that?

Cheers

He was probably going through the Wankel start up and stop procedure! If you don't know about it, you need to do a Google on it. A friend recently bought one ( as a toy) and is in the process of spending thousands on an engine revamp to make it keep going ........ again ........ and again!

That'll be for an RX7 or 8 - The MX5 has a "normal" engine.

I own an early RX7 with a Rover V8............ I wouldn't touch a wankel with a barge pole

You have not said which year of MX5 but they only ever came with either a 1.6 or 1.8 engine with a maximum of about 140 HP on the latest ones.

There not really about speed in fairness, just good handling, top down motoring and reliability. About the same in speed to a entry level MGF or TF

There are alright once upgraded with better fuel pumps, exhaust, supercharger and suspension from what I've heard. But they are very unreliable from what I saw of my uncles one! It doesn't hold a stick to the RX-7 mind you...

MX5's are well known as being very slow. Watched a YT show the other day and the guys MX5 was a dismal 117bhp. Though they are way lighter than a ZT.

Not sure whether to consider my ZT as slow as a MX-5 kept up, or to consider it quick as it beat an MX-5 even though the ZT's way heavier

I think the MX5 is a bit like the MGF. All show no go. They are designed for the driving experience not performance. Seems from the MX5 clubs that owners have to really modify their cars to get performance. I know there are some seriously fast ones, but not stock.
MGF looks way better though.
