Default Xenon headlights

Will they work if your car wasn’t fitted with them as standard
Pros and cons of fitting them
Many thanks

They will work but MOT regulations mean they'd need to be removed and replaced with standard headlights when MOT'd otherwise they would be a MOT failure.

If I've read Rick-Sta's post correctly, then if you replaced the standard headlamps with the full MGR Xenon set-up, it would be OK for the MoT.

The way I interpreted the rules is that modifying halogen units to fit HID or LED bulbs should result in an MoT test fail. Swapping the headlight units out for proper unmodified Xenon units should pass.

Extract from MoT manual: "Existing halogen headlamp units on vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp for light source and lamp not compatible.

This does not refer to complete replacement headlamp units which may be constructed with HID or LED light sources.

If a complete headlamp unit has been replaced with a unit that was manufactured with HID or LED light sources, it must not be failed for ‘Light source and lamp not compatible’ but it must meet all other requirements detailed in section 4 of this manual specific to the type fitted at the time of test."

That post is regards to fitting HID kits to halogen headlamps, not retrofitting factory xenons, even though both options achieve the same result in terms of light output and beam pattern requirements.

correct. You can swap out your halogen headlights for factory xenons which is fine for MOTs.

However, I believe that HID fitting also requires auto-levelling and washers to be incorporated?

no not required in England, Scotland or Wales for MOTs. Think it is required for Ireland or Northern Ireland, can't remember which.

Headlamp washers aren't even testable on our cars as they're too old. So our cars can't ever fail for headlamp washers not working.
