Default £1500 for a clutch?!

Good afternoon

My clutch pedal went to the floor on my diesel 75, I checked the master cylinder and there is no leaks so am presuming it's the slave in the box.

Been quoted £1500 for a new clutch, slave and dmf. Sounds ridiculous to me. Is it?!

Wondering if anyone's had a clutch recently

Many thanks

I would definitely get some more quotes.
Maybe it was there way of saying they don't want the job by quoting an exorbitant price.
I've experienced this in the past with garages

Worth noting that the DMF doesn't usually need replacing. Rimmers price them at £390 inc VAT (https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-PSD103252) so that should bring the quoted price down by a chunk.

I've seen clutch replacement invoices (clutch slave and master without DMF) for that much before. That's pretty much the high street price. You have to go to a mg rover specialist for the best price. Normally the clutch replacement is £500 ish without the DMF froma mg rover specialist.

Kevin at MG Rover Services in Wickford, Essex fitted a clutch to my 1.8 last year. I bought the clutch kit/slave & a guide tube from DMGRS (the price has increased somewhat now) & along with the labour the total price was approx £600. The master wasn't replaced as it was relatively new & fine.

you shouldn't need a dmf which will save u £500...

should be £160'ish for a 3 peace clutch... then labour to fit it which should be about £400/£500

hope this helps

Kevin sorted mine last month after some disastrous experiences with new plastic master cylinders, 2 of which failed very quickly. The plastic master and slave are just not fit for purpose, IMHO.

Kevin dropped in a metal master cylinder and a metal slave, both of which are working well (touch wood).

My plastic slave lasted 13 years, the 13 year old plastic master is still in place and working fine. It's about correct fitment and sympathetic use. Don't sit at the lights or in queues holding the clutch down, it wears the thrust bearing and creates extra heat, plastic doesn't like that. Clutchless gear changes will massively reduce the wear on the hydraulics and the friction/pressure plates. If done correctly this method will have no adverse affects.
The Tazu metal master and slave do not have a great reputation for reliability. I use AP masters and modified LUK slaves.

Lee.
