Default Labour cost for steering rack change?

Hi, i'm currently deciding between selling this car or keeping it, but theres a few things about my car that if were different i'd be keeping it for sure. I've read that the ZT rack can be fitted and this improves the response and requires less turns to move the wheels which is exactly what i'm after, it seems i can get the rack for £35 but do you have an idea on what the labour cost would be?

Thanks

No idear of the labour cost/time from a garage

But I would be pleased at 1.5 hours and probably wouldnt winge at 2 !

Dont forget you will need to have it topped up/refilled with fluid and have it tracked both part of the job obviously but both adding to the cost?? (might even be worth doing a 4 way lazer jobby if you dont know if its ever been done??)

To help however I just went out and checked my lock to lock turns and it was 3 turns lock to lock - LESS - the width of the lower "spoke" on the steering wheel at the rim! thats a 03 ZTT diesel by the way

Whats yours on the Rover??

HTH ??

Andy

Hi, thanks for your thoughts on the time for the job, I'm not sure when it was last tracked but it seems to wonder around a bit and the steerings vague and imprecise, going from 15 - 16 - 17" wheels improved things everytime but i still don't think it should be like it is.

Your lock to lock seems exactly as it should be for a ZT, being 2.95 officially compared with the 3.2 of the 75, how does the steering in your ZT compare to the other cars you've driven?

I changed my rack recently, not for the same reason, it took me about 3 hours and it was not a pleasent job there isnt much room. I agree with you though the steering is too low geared I think this was commented on by james mates when he road tested the car for top gear, he said it felt soggy and that sums it up for me. However are you sure the ZT rack is geared differently I seem to recall one of the more experienced members saying they were all the same might be worth double checking before you shell out.

Hi, thanks for the replies, its kept it as an option if the labour can be about 2 hours max. I'm pretty sure the racks were different up to the facelift when the 75 became fitted with the ZT rack as standard, a review somewhere on the web highlighted this as well. It wouldn't and couldn't be a job i do myself but works out cheaper than selling and swapping to a ZT

Well let us know how you go on and how it feels afterwards, if its a good result I might consider changing my rack too.
