Wire Spec. for Cruise Control
A bit of an odd question but i've been slowly getting round to retro-fitting cruise, i've now got all the parts except for the cruise ECU electrical connector, now it's just the wiring I've got a diagram and a bit of an understanding where it all should go and so on but with no electrical knowledge at all i just want to see what kind of wire thickness, gauge etc to use?

I doubt it'll be high current, but I like using 1.5mm² wiring normally, as it's easy to route, doesn't take up much space, but is still up to taking a bit of power if it needs to.
For higher-current stuff (i.e. my speakers) I use 2.5mm² - not much more expensive, but takes up a little more space. Most of the OE wiring is ~0.75mm². 0.75mm² = 18-19 AWG 1.5mm² = 15-16 AWG 2.5mm² = 13-14 AWG The size of the wire only determines how much power you can get away with passing down it - I would imagine cruise control wouldn't draw much power (i.e. it's just sending signals around) so 1.5mm² would be fine. I also use the 1.5mm² stuff over anything smaller (even for low-current stuff) because I find it easier to work with. The tiny cables you get with LED strips from China are always a ballache to crimp because they're so small... EDIT - For high current stuff obviously I use proper cable - currently using 54mm² & even 104mm² in places. Last edited by Jakg; 13th July 2011 at 00:41.. |

I didn't need to mess with any wires when I did mine, everything just plugged in to exiting plugs.
There was one plug for the on/off switch behind the Lil panel that holds the heated seat switches, the other for the ECU was behind and beneath the panel at the the rear of the glove box. I already had the controls on my steering wheel. Once I had things plugged in it worked.. except .. The "resume" button on the steering wheel does not work.. But I can easily manage without it.. Actually I rarely use cruise, too much traffic innit.. ... |

Cheers Jack, thats a great help that information. Will be using this site to get the cables, to keep the wires factory colour coded to make it easier - http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product/70.
I wish my car was like that James but unfortunately none of the cruise wiring is in my car so theres no plugging in and cruising Thats the plan, making it up from scratch. Got the wiring diagram, a basic idea of where it goes and the route it could take, hardest parts i think will be getting through to the ECU and connecting there and possibly connecting to the ABS speed and K-Bus communication side, may have to source another clutch switch but it's been known for the standard fit brake switch to be of the correct type and swapping that for the clutch switch to work. I can see why now i've put this off for so long but after 7000 miles in just over 3 months i've decided to set about doing it First steps to be done shortly is getting a rough idea of the length of the different colour wires needed, I will save that info and put it on here if anyone else in future wants to do this. Using these wiring diagrams: Parts: Cruise ECU and Electrical connector (Connector yet to find, £10 off a breaker) Steering wheel switches Master Switch and electrical connector And a bit of luck |
